Ice Cube the dog has been at El Paso Animal Services for more than 300 days, and he’s going a little bit “kennel crazy,” said Mason Castillo, a dog trainer and enrichment specialist with El Paso Animal Services.
“He’s getting closer to be here to a year. We have other dogs who have been here for over a year but in his case, he has been declining for a while already, which means that he started to spin in the kennel, he’s starting to chew on his own paws. He’s gotten so bad that now we can’t have him in a kennel with another dog,” said Castillo.
Castillo said that Ice Cub is a “good boy,” and that he can certainly be at the park with other dogs, but “because of the stress he can’t be paired up at the moment.”

As a result, Ice Cube is missing out on developing important social skills learned from dog-on-dog interactions.
Castillo said that Ice Cube is relatively young and that he has a lot of energy.
“It’s a little bit problematic in this shelter because…we are full. We have lots and lots of animals,” said Castillo. “We have a lot of volunteers that walk him, but the problem is he needs more than one walk a day, he needs more than one interaction a day. And we need somebody who is actually able to take him home and help us with that.”
