Exact Moment Shelter’s Longest Resident Dog Realizes She’s Safe at New Home

Emery, who was previously known as Elvira, spent over a year at Cabin Critters Rescue in Scioto County, Ohio, before she was adopted by owner Amy Farnsworth.

“I adopted her because I have had two other shelter dogs that have since passed away and they were both the sweetest, kindest, most loving dogs I could ever wish for,” Farnsworth told Newsweek. “I can’t thank this shelter enough for caring for her for well over a year. They said she was their longest non-adopted shelter dog.”

A heartwarming video captured the moment that Emery, who had been overlooked in the Ohio shelter for so long, finally realized she was safe and in a loving home.

“The first week she was home, she slept most of the time, and now, 4 weeks later, she is well-adjusted and is just such a happy and sweet girl,” Farnsworth said.

Each year 6.3 million pets are surrendered to U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet ‘Shelter Watch Report’ found. Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

Emery’s story sheds light on the plight of often overlooked shelter dogs. Cabin Critters Rescue, a small shelter in Scioto County, housed Emery along with 80 other dogs.

“Shelter dogs really are the best dogs; they are so appreciative of a loving home,” Farnsworth said.

She shared the heartwarming moment on TikTok where it has been viewed over 200,000 times and melted hearts.

Farnswoth hopes that sharing the beautiful moment will encourage more people to think about adopting shelter dogs. “I hope more people will reach out to shelters when they are looking for their family pet,” she said.
