The luck of the lottery winners – and their supervisor

Jumps in the air and tears of joy – or just sit there and can’t say anything more. The supervisors of lottery players who have won large sums of money with their tip experience all of this. And some stories just stick around forever.

No winnings without a slip of paper, so the lottery ticket must be kept in a safe place.

Ein huge win in the lottery. First there is this almost incredulous joy. But then many fear for the lottery ticket. Under no circumstances should it be lost before a profit supervisor has checked it. “People find out a few days in advance that they have won. And many are already afraid that something could happen to the note. Because without a slip of paper – no profit, ”says Rainer Holmer, profit advisor at Lotto Bayern about his work.

A woman once asked him to smell the receipt. She then totally smelled of coffee, “she kept it in her coffee can”. One man had frozen it, another hid it between the unpaid bills. “Most of them keep their receipts under their pillows. But they cannot sleep on it because they constantly check to see whether it is still there, ”says Holmer.

Holmer, who is also the lottery spokesman, takes care of players who have won more than 100,000 euros. They can then come to him at the Lotto headquarters in Munich. “In my office, the winners can have a drink, take a breath and talk on my couch.” At that point, most of them had only known for a few days that they had won. The receipt is checked and then the money is transferred. “My job is only to be able to congratulate the big winners.” Then Holmer adds with a laugh: “A very pleasant task, by the way.”

“Fairy tales from a thousand and one nights”

The 48-year-old has been with Lotto Bayern for more than 17 years. He “got to work like a virgin with a child”. After studying German and history to become a teacher, he learned that someone was going on parental leave at the lottery customer magazine “Glücksblatt”. He applied and was accepted. There he started with simple texts, but quickly worked his way up to being an interviewer for big winners.

Someone who did not want to hang on to his winnings was a craftsman from Franconia. “His company would have gone bankrupt overnight because he ran out of customer claims. He had already borrowed money from friends and was now facing the end. “Holmer describes it as a” fairy tale from a thousand and one nights “when the craftsman suddenly had six correct numbers and was able to save his company and the jobs of his employees. This story moved him very much.

He was similarly moved when a man had won several million and still sat sadly in front of him. “He then said,” Look, Mr. Holmer, I would leave you the whole million now if my wife would get well again. ” I would have loved to help him, but of course I can’t. ”His job is to listen, answer questions and give advice. “Many want to know whether they have to pay tax on profits. You don’t have to, he’s free of income tax. ”He also advises his visitors to think twice about whom they will tell about their lottery luck; and not make rash decisions.

Nice to be surrounded by happy people

Nationwide, the highest profit this year was at the Eurojackpot in July: the maximum amount of 90 million euros went half to Hesse and half to Saxony-Anhalt.

Lotto man Holmer remembers the Bavarian record win in 2015 in particular: three craftsmen had won more than 33 million euros. “They have never played before, that was their first ticket, I like to remember that,” says Holmer. One of them bought a Bulli and was up and away with his surfboard. The second stayed in his job, but only served customers he liked. The third was just happy to be rid of his debts.

“The best thing about my job is that 99 percent of the time I’m with very happy people. I believe that everything we surround ourselves with has an impact on ourselves, ”says Holmer. And sometimes he even plays the lottery himself. “Once I won ten euros with the numbers, that really blew me away.” He laughs.
